River and Lydia are 2 weeks short of 17 months actual and 5 days short of 14 months corrected. Why is that important? Well, motor function-wise, they’re pretty caught up with their actual age.
Lydia is starting to walk faster, testing the boundaries of running. River surprised us all by walking two days ago, and she is now doing it like she had been a walking child since she was born. River and Lydia have a deep appreciation for music and noises overall, and they love dancing to some adorable tunes. They know how to sing one of the three melodies we sing with them extremely well (it consists of ‘dada’ for the most part), and are getting the hang of the other two, knowing when they should interact by clapping or saying “hey”. They climb up and down the couch with no issues, and they know how to weave around toys on the floor when they’re walking with much fewer falls.
But, when it comes to talking, I am trying to be an optimist and not think they’ll need speech therapy.
Lydia says “mama”, “yes”, “no”, “doggy”, “Zelda”, “dada”, “what is that”, “see it”, “baby”, and now “thank you”, all in her baby-talk way. River says “happy”, “doggy”, “blue”, “mama”, “dada”, “baba”, “what’s this”, “bye bye”, and “goodbye”. I feel like it’s a great start, but I’m also a little nervous about it. Let’s hope I’m worrying for nothing.
Another awesome milestone is the outgrowing of their infant carriers! They had 2 inches left to outgrow them, as you can see in the above picture, but I didn’t feel comfortable putting them in those anymore (suffice to say my back wasn’t happy with me carrying them in those down the stairs either), so we bought them a “walking milestone” present – two big girl car seats! We chose to go with Graco because we’ve had nothing but great experiences with the Graco DuoGlider double stroller and the Graco SnugRide 35 infant car seats with bases. So, we bought them a Graco MyRide 65 each! Tell me if you think they just love it. I know we will – the new car seats will last for years!
This coming week will be more of a milestone for me. Rick will going on his first work trip since the girls were born, which means it’ll be just me with them for four days. I. Am. So. Excited! With them a little older now and with a solid bedtime routine (they truly sleep from 8pm-7am now), this will be a fun experience, especially on my two days off with them. A beloved friend of mine, Sue, is having her daughter and her three kids visiting from Kentucky. The same daughter that babysat River and Lydia for me for two days right before they got into daycare, so our kids know each other. That plus adult company, plus hot tub and possibly pool time? Exactly what we need. I really can’t wait.
Life has been good. We got our house all repainted and cleaned, light fixtures fixed, toilet seats replaced… Now all we need is the final push – make it open-house worthy. Our realtor says he has people lined up to come check the place out, and we can’t wait to find a good new home for our little family. We’ll be listing our house in less than 2 weeks!
It seems that milestones don’t just apply to babies, but to their entire family too.
